In his third year as chancellor of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, Dr. Robin Gary Cummings is proud to lead a university on the move. Together with Provost, Dr. David Ward, he is making a significant impact in Pembroke and beyond—especially in Moore County.
More than 980 UNC Pembroke alumni and 55 employees call Moore County home. Another 138 students along with three of the university’s trustees are also from Moore County. With an increasing footprint in Moore County and throughout southeastern North Carolina, UNC Pembroke is focused on maintaining its historic mission of access and affordability while driving the economy of the region.
An important program is on the horizon for students considering higher education—the NC Promise Tuition Plan. UNCP was founded 131 years ago to expand access to an entire race of people who had been denied. NC Promise builds on that trailblazing legacy in an unprecedented way by offering access to a high-quality education with in-state tuition cost of just $500/semester.
Beginning fall 2018, under NC Promise, in-state students will save approximately $10,400 in tuition over four years, and the savings for out-of-state students will total more than $40,000. That’s significant savings a new graduate could use toward a down payment for a house, launching a business, starting a family or continuing their education to obtain a master’s or doctoral degree.
Another area of growth at UNC Pembroke is the School of Business—a major component in the university’s efforts to move the needle and serve as a driver for regional economic development. A $36 million state-of-the-art building is planned to meet growing enrollment and the needs of area employers. The university has seen unprecedented support for the project from voters, elected officials, private donors, philanthropists and corporations who understand the impact this school will have as we train the next generation of business leaders and entrepreneurs.
From championship athletics to educating the region’s next generation of health care leaders, teachers, entrepreneurs and leaders in every profession, UNC Pembroke embraces its role as this region’s university. UNC Pembroke’s mission is Changing Lives Through Education — lives across the world, but especially here in our backyard.
