THE NATIONAL ATHLETIC VILLAGE

Founder and Owner Leigh Bortins and Director Sara Sullards discuss the National Athletic Village on Air Tool Rd. in Southern Pines as they continue to create a higher profile for this exceptional facility for people of all ages.

Foundation

The National Athletic Village was founded 4 years ago by Leigh Bortins and her family. The Bortins family has always led an active life. Her sons played Rugby as well as other sports. The National Athletic Village was founded for the community to have a space for all ages and all athletic abilities to PLAY MORE (Our tag line).

Activities

The National Athletic Village adapted once COVID-19 hit and created the NAV Sports Course. The Sports Course is designed similarly to a golf course. There are 13 Play Stations spread
across 70+ acres of property. At any point, visitors may call ahead to schedule a Play Time to come out and experience all the NAV has to offer. The National Athletic Village has so much
outdoor space to offer the community to safely experience fun and athletic activities outdoors and to PLAY MORE.

Events

We are very involved in the local community. We love to support causes in the area and help out as much as we can. A couple of recently hosted events includes the Bocce Bash fundraiser for the Sandhills Community Center and well as the Back the Red White & Blue event in support of the local police, fire and ems first responders. We also put on our own events from time to time. We recently held an all outdoors Halloween event with many activities for the community to enjoy. We will also be putting on a Christmas event this year on December 4th, 5th, 11th and 12th from 5pm - 10pm each night. Unlike other businesses, we have the flexibility to accommodate the numbers with our outdoors space. The event will have activities such as face painting, pinecone decorating, spear the reindeer, firepit, musical entertainment, Santa’s workshop as well as our Holiday Trail designed and decorated with beautiful light displays for an all around holiday experience.

THE GIFT OF A PUBLIC MONTESSORI SCHOOL EDUCATION IN SOUTHERN PINES

Head of School Katherine Rucker, Assistant Head of School, Markisha Young, and board member Taylor Clement discuss the benefits of a 'free' public Montessori School education and what a rarity it is to have a public option in a non-urban area, since the majority of Montessori schools nationwide require a private school tuition cost model.

In discussing this option there is also a wonderful opportunity to pursue the acquisition of the Southern Pines elementary school on May St. in the downtown Southern Pines area to accommodate the growth of the Moore Montessori school and preserve the character of the downtown corridor.

More than that, these three gifted women walk us thru the process of learning and the process of in class non-punitive discipline in a Montessori environment.

In a time when the demographic shift continues to change and the demand for the best schools for our children is paramount, this ‘no cost’ alternative for the best elementary school education and the long term benefits of preserving the downtown area of So. Pines makes so much sense on every level.
