CAROLINA BASEBALL SHACK

At The Carolina Baseball Shack in West End, NC, promising Moore County youth athletes have an opportunity to learn the discipline, teamwork and technical skills they need to advance to the next level. At this state-of-the-art baseball training facility, youths from ages 8 to 30 hone their pitching and fielding skills, gain strength and overall fitness and “learn from those who have been there.” The Carolina Baseball Shack coaching staff works closely with the rec ball, two local high school and travel baseball teams in Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen, Carthage and surrounding areas. Students also commute from surrounding counties to participate in the clinics and classes offered there regularly.

Rodney Swarms and Major League Baseball Pitcher Rob Wooten co-founded The Carolina Baseball Shack in 2017. Over the past year, they have added equipment to the facility and it now houses professional-level strength-training equipment, a weight room, resistance cables and conference areas.

Wooten, a North Carolina native and graduate of UNC, shares his Major League pitching expertise through one-on-one and small group sessions as well as pitching camps. Sports Performance and Strength Coach Ray Bear, who has a degree in sports medicine and has trained athletes at the professional level for more than 20 years, focuses on helping players become stronger and more efficient. Adam Friede, outstanding fielder and shortstop at Pembroke who also had a tryout with the San Diego Padres, rounds out the teaching staff. Friede is the founder of Knights Prime Baseball.

MOORE COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE – TODAY

The Moore County Chamber of Commerce was incorporated in March 1967 under the leadership of several visionaries. They found it critical to provide unwavering support to the growing business community in Moore County, and for 50 years, the Moore County Chamber (MCC) has done just that.

Throughout the past half century, a lot has changed when it comes to owning small business. From the building, and permitting side of things, down to the informational resources used, marketing, employee management etc. The term ‘Chamber of Commerce’, was once a household name. Now, becoming a member of a business association such as this, is merely a choice. Chambers all over our nation strive to remain relevant in an ever-changing economy. One in which there is never enough time. So how does the Moore County Chamber meet the needs of our unique business community today? Through dedicated work, the MCC Staff keeps tabs on the pulse of the business community.

With a mission to ‘Foster a Vibrant Business Community’, programs and events are under consistent evaluation. With an eye on the needs of its members, the MCC Staff works to keep topics relevant, and strive to maximize the return on investment. Multiply networking opportunities exist each month, from the Small Business Networking Luncheon, to Human Resource Executive Association; a monthly luncheon hosted by the Chamber for professional development in the HR sector, the MCC Staff adjusts accordingly.

In 2018 the Moore Young Professionals welcomed roughly 20 new members to its network, and has big plans for growth, philanthropy, and fundraising. Moore County Leadership Institute (MCLI) kicked off its 29th annual class this January with a 2-day retreat. MCLI is a program that fosters enhanced leadership and personal growth, a commitment to learning more about Moore County, and graduates often reference the professional network that uniquely exists in MCLI. With 2018 well underway, the MCC Board of Directors and Staff are in the ongoing process of planning strategically for the years ahead. With 50 years celebrated and a renewed energy, the Moore County Chamber looks forward, excited about the future and all of its successes.

THE PRESIDENT WILL SEE YOU NOW an interview with Peggy Grande

Peggy Grande’s story is a beautiful read about a man and a young woman who had the opportunity of a lifetime to know Ronald & Nancy Reagan for the better part of 20 years; 10 years as his Executive Assistant from 1989 – 1999.
Her book captures the civility and kindness of Reagan as well as her own story of coming of age.
Today, the message & life lessons this book brings to the forefront is calming, hopeful, kind and optimistic for all generations of Americans.

An excerpt:
With most public figures there is a public persona and a private persona. I hope in this book that people will see Ronald Reagan as I saw him behind the scenes – and realize that he was the exact same person when the cameras were rolling as he was when they weren’t. He lived a life of respect and kindness and graciousness and gentlemanly manners and thoughtfulness all the time, regardless of whether or not he thought someone was watching. Those who criticized him as being extremely complex and harboring deep secrets missed the beauty of his simplicity. SCAD – Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection

Two local Moore County women share their stories of their personal experience with SCAD.

Julia Brokmeyer, a past guest on our show, and well known in our community as the founder of Moore Choices, and Katie Wylie, a nurse practitioner for Pinehurst Medical Clinic’s Gastroenterology Dept. both suffered heart attacks within one year of each other. Both ladies are young mothers without a history of heart disease, high cholesterol or excessive plaque, yet they both endured a type of heart attack referred to as SCAD. It is not a well know type of heart attack and their insights are valuable to all.

SCAD is…
Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection. In a nutshell, during SCAD, a sudden tear occurs within the layers of one or more arteries to the heart. This tear blocks blood flow and causes a heart attack. Unfortunately, SCAD may also lead to cardiac arrest and sometimes death. SCAD is the #1 cause of a heart attack in women under age 50 as well as the #1 cause of a heart attack in women who are pregnant and new mothers.

Their personal story lends a great hand to better understanding this type of health risk, and their new friendship and shared experiences will create a long time bond between these two fine ladies.

THE ARTS IN MOORE COUNTY SCHOOLS, with CALLI MCINTYRE

“It was a pleasure to have Calli McIntyre host this week’s show. Calli was a past guest in Sept. 2017. I offered her the chance to host her own show because I knew she would excel. I don’t think this charismatic young lady, who is a junior at Pinecrest, ever met a challenge she didn’t wrap her arms around. She organized the show, the synopsis, the guests and the content without any help from me. She achieves everyday.
