Barnes Brooks is the Treasurer for the non-profit Caring Hearts for Canines (CHFC) and the founder of Fundraising Consultants; a NC based company that offers non-profit organizations guidance on finance development. Barnes has worked in both the political and non-profit arenas as a Finance Director for the likes of Congressman Jack Kemp, Dr. Bill Bennett, and Congresswoman Nancy L. Johnson, CT 5, among others. When Barnes moved to NC to pursue her love for all things equestrian she decided to turn her professional endeavors away from politics and focus on the non-profit sector. Barnes’ love for animals and interest in the issue of animal welfare prompted her to join the Board of Caring Hearts for Canines in 2015. Barnes currently lives in Southern Pines, NC with two rescue dogs, two rescue cats, one pony, and her precocious six your old daughter.
The free exchange between Neil & Barnes covers a myriad of issues that are prevalent in Moore County, from proper obedience training, spay & neuter clinics, lack of consistent regulations at the state level to help control the pet overpopulation problem, student education the ‘rescue dog’ market, and the need to always raise private funds to enable this agency to be an effective partner in our community.
Caring Hearts for Canines was founded in late 2014 by Jennifer Chopping for the purpose of saving dogs from high kill shelters that would otherwise be euthanized. In addition to rescuing and rehoming dogs, Caring Hearts for Canines endeavors to educate the public about the issue of animal welfare in an effort to decrease the proliferation of unwanted animals. Since its founding, Caring Hearts for Canines has saved nearly 2500 dogs.
Caring Hearts for Canines (CHFC) has grown tremendously since it was first incorporated. The group that began as small foster based rescue handling a handful of dogs has grown into an organization with its own shelter that rescues and rehomes between 500 and 600 dogs annually. Caring Hearts for Canines does not have any paid staff and relies entirely on the support of it volunteers, collaborative partners, and donors to carry out its operations.
Today, Caring Hearts for Canines operations are run out of its shelter building which was made possible through the generosity and continued support of Mr. & Mrs. Art Parker and their son Alan. Caring Hearts for Canines continues to maintain a large network of foster based homes that provide shelter to dogs that require special care or additional time before they are ready to be adopted into forever homes. Nearly 65% of Caring Hearts for Canines dogs are transported North to partner shelters for adoption, the remaining animals are adopted locally.
Caring Hearts for Canines hopes that one day high kill shelters will become a relic of the past. To that end, we recognize the significant impact that educating the public has on decreasing the number of unwanted animals. Public outreach, in schools, civic clubs, and special events, is an important part of CHFC’s effort to educate the community about issues vital to animal welfare including spaying/neutering, vaccinations, heartworm prevention, appropriate shelter, and basic care of companion animals.
