Guest speakers Kim Sobat, Frank Pierce and Laura George discussed the changing landscape in the visual art business and what artists and galleries now do to keep pace and sell their artwork.

Kim Sobat is a local artist and former gallery owner. Her abstract and impressionistic paintings have been featured in many Moore County locations including the Arts Council, Eye Candy Gallery, Artist Alley, The Artist

Laura C. George is a printmaker and business coach for artists. Laura liberates and energizes artists who feel stuck, arming them with the knowledge they need to create a career that supports them emotionally and

Frank Pierce has an extensive background as a fine artist, freelance photographer, illustrator, graphic designer and owner of Eye Candy Gallery in Southern Pines. MOORE COUNTY SCHOOLS – INNOVATIONS IN 21st CENTURY LEARING

Moore County Schools Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence leads a discussion about the STEM Infusion learning program that is being taught in the Moore County schools. STEM is the acronym for SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICS. STEM EDUCATION better prepares students for jobs of the future; many of which have not even been created yet. STEM EDUCATION better prepares students to compete globally in these areas and to foster critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and a more independent mind set.

STEM Master Teacher, Lisa Neal, 4th grade teacher and former STEM student teacher, Amber Hicks, Entrepreneurial Studies Instructor, Lowell Simon & 4th grade student Lizzie Durtschi are panel members who aptly lend credence to the day to day experience that STEM Infusion learning provides and promises for the future of our students. The STEM Summer Camp will be held this July 14-17th at SMS from 8:00 a.m. – 3:45 p.m. daily for rising 3rd graders through 8th graders. This is a free program. Lowell Simon speaks about an exciting program he is heading at Union Pines High School; UP Start and why Entrepreneurship in Education is so vital. He speaks about two upcoming programs; Shark Tank Sandhills and Moore Forward Mentoring.

Moore County Schools are on the move & continuing to ‘up their game’ and create the most meaningful learning experience possible for all their students for the 21st century.

MILITARY APPRECIATION MONTH

Military Missions In Action (MMIA) Founder and Director Michael Dorman, along with Miss Moore County’s Outstanding Teen, Elizabeth O’Brien, help us celebrate Military Appreciation Month in a multitude of ways.

MMIA is a non-profit organization committed to assisting veterans with disabilities to achieve independent living while also supporting active servicemen and women. Founded in 2008, this North Carolina based organization has provided over $2 million in aid to local veterans with the help of more than 2000 local volunteers. Elizabeth O’Brien’s dedication to MMIA and the Military Child Access Assistance Program (MCAAP), is one of the four crowned features of her reign as Miss Moore County Outstanding Teen.

BUILDING HOPE is a fundraiser event sponsored by Community Presbyterian Church (CPC).  The community service is presented by CPC Director of Music, Terri Sinclair, sinclari@coastal.edu  and Director of Children and Youth Music, Kirsten Foyles, badgergirlnc@gmail.com, as a community outreach project to support the work of MMIA in our community. Retired US Army Colonel, John Galland, will be inviting all active and retired military families to show their support for MMIA by attending this service.

 

The service will be presented by the CPC adult, children’s and youth choirs along with a chamber orchestra of local musicians and military personnel.

The service will be held on Sunday, May 18, 4:00 pm at Owens Auditorium on the campus of Sandhills Community College.  The service is free and open to the public, but a time to offer tax deductible donations will be provided.

MOTHER’S DAY 2014 – REMEMBRANCES & REFLECTIONS

Mother’s Day 2014 is commemorated by 4 respected professional women & mothers in Moore County; Real estate broker Lucretia Pinnock; writer, Melanie Coughlin; US Airways flight attendant Krista Spence; Chiropractor, Brenda Stroker. Between our four guests there are 17 children & 8 grandchildren, ranging in age from age 2 thru their 30’s, that make their stories and recollections special & heartfelt.
